The University of Bradford, located in the vibrant North of England, stands as an institution known for social inclusion and accessibility in higher education. For the past two years, it has proudly topped the Social Mobility Index of English universities, showcasing its dedication to providing opportunities for all.
The University’s Student Central building, home to the University of Bradford Union of Students (UBU) is currently undergoing a refurbishment, aimed to transform the space into a modern, comfortable, and lively hub where students can work, rest and socialise.
The Challenge
The UBU offers students a comprehensive array of facilities and support, including sports, societies, media areas, entertainment, and academic assistance. To enhance these offerings, a refurbishment of Student Central was necessary to create a productive and energising environment.
Main Contractors Sycamore Square Group, and architects Stephen George and Partner were required to source and specify a complete ceiling solution that was both cost-effective and aesthetically pleasing. There was also the challenge to conceal the extensive services housed in the ceiling voids while maintaining a contemporary design.
The Solution
Zentia, the UK’s market leader in complete ceiling solutions, provided an ideal suspended ceiling tile system for the University of Bradford, meeting all project requirements within budget constraints. Collaborating closely with the project teams, Zentia tailored its solutions to ensure cost-effectiveness and aesthetic appeal.
The design featured Zentia’s DecoMesh E15 ceiling tiles in black. As metal mesh ceiling tiles made from galvanised steel, they are able to add contemporary class and edgy aesthetics to any kind of interior. Available in eight different colours, six mesh patterns and three edge details, the DecoMesh range offers architects the flexibility to make bold design statements. For UBU, the E15 tiles were chosen for their open effect, featuring a 15mm long diagonal and 6.5mm short diagonal mesh pattern.
DecoMesh tiles are powder coated and painted to prevent rust and can be easily lifted by hand with gloves for quick access into the ceiling void above. This feature allows the services at The University of Bradford to be efficiently concealed yet readily available when needed. Custom linear lights have also been integrated behind the DecoMesh panels, allowing light to travel through the mesh.
The result is a bold and stylish space designed to motivate and energise students, enhancing their university experience and ensuring they thrive in an exciting and transformative environment.
